Show Me for Emergencies app
Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH)
The Show Me for Emergencies app was developed to facilitate communication in emergency response situations between public health professionals and people with communication challenges.
- I recreated 250 icons across the app to increase readability and understanding for the app audience.
- With this redesign, I introduced a new illustration style to give the characters authenticity, diversity, and clearer expression, while still meshing well with currently existing icons.
- Winner of the 2025 Clearmark Award for Best App.

As the app is meant for an audience with communication challenges, the icons were designed to be visually understood on their own even if their labels could not. I focused on keeping the designs simple, trying not to bog them down with too many details that would become harder to distinguish when shown on phones. The previous design of these icons had stick figures, which were not only far less relatable to audiences, but also harder to depict doing very specific activities. Redesigning the characters with semi-realism and diversity in mind allowed me to tackle both of these problems, and also allowed an amount of storytelling and consistency by giving each section a specific main character that was used throughout.
